What Is Sleep Apnea?

The most common type, obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), occurs when the soft tissues in your throat collapse and block your airway. This is the type that dentists and doctors typically treat with oral appliances or CPAP machines.

What Is CBD, and What Does it Do?

CBD is an acronym for “cannabidiol,” which is a chemical found in the cannabis plant. But despite what many people mistakenly believe, it’s not the chemical that causes the “high” many people associate with the plant (that would be THC).

Instead, CBD interacts with your body’s endocannabinoid system—a network that helps regulate mood, pain, and sleep.

Some studies suggest CBD may reduce anxiety, promote relaxation, and improve sleep quality. However, these effects are mostly seen in people with insomnia or stress-related sleep issues and not necessarily those with sleep apnea.

Can CBD Help with Sleep Apnea Symptoms?

Right now, there’s no scientific evidence showing that CBD oil can treat or cure sleep apnea. Because sleep apnea involves physical airway obstruction, CBD can’t do anything to address the root cause.

That said, CBD might indirectly help some patients by helping them relax or by reducing inflammation that worsens airway resistance. However, these benefits are still speculative, and the position of the American Academy of Sleep Medicine is to avoid using it as a treatment.

If you do decide to investigate CBD, talk to your doctor first. The chemical could interact badly with other medications or cause unintended side effects.
